UN - 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Nyando Social Justice Center was well represented at the UN event in Gigiri, Nairobi, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 

The event, known as the Human Rights 75 High-Level Event, is a hybrid global gathering that connects regional hubs in Nairobi, Bangkok, and Panama with the Palais des Nations in Geneva. The event's mandate is to:


  • Promote the health and protection of vulnerable populations

The event focused on advocating for the well-being of particularly vulnerable groups, such as women, children, and persons with disabilities, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

  • Raise awareness about the impacts of COVID-19

The event sought to increase awareness about the effects of the pandemic on economic, social, and cultural rights, emphasizing the centrality of human rights in socio-economic responses.

  • Highlight the importance of social protection

The event emphasized the need for social protection systems to safeguard individuals from economic and social hardships, especially during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Engage with stakeholders

The event provided a platform for governments, civil society, and UN entities to discuss and advocate for the promotion of human rights, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Regional hubs and global connections

The event linked regional hubs in Nairobi, Bangkok, and Panama with the Palais des Nations in Geneva, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among stakeholders.


During the event, Nyando Social's participation highlighted the center's work in advocating for human rights and social justice in western Kenya. 


The Nyando Social Justice Center is known for its efforts to address human rights issues, including the mainstreaming of women's rights and the protection of vulnerable groups. Their presence at the event underscored the center's commitment to promoting and protecting human rights at both the local and international levels.


The event provided a platform for stakeholders, including governments, civil society, and UN entities, to discuss and advocate for the promotion of human rights, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
