Combating Violence Against Women in Arusha, Tanzania

Caren Kiarie, a prominent human rights defender and the convener of the Nyando Social Justice Center, recently represented her organization at the Africa Institute of International Law (AIIL) training workshop on Combating Violence Against Women in Africa held in Arusha, Tanzania from November 25 to 29, 2024. This workshop brought together 30 African women human rights defenders from various countries, creating a collaborative environment focused on addressing the pressing issue of violence against women.

Training and Experience Sharing

During the workshop, Caren Kiarie played a pivotal role not only as a trainer but also as a mentor, sharing her extensive experience regarding the challenges faced by Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs). Her insights provided participants with a deeper understanding of the systemic barriers and risks that WHRDs encounter while advocating for the rights of others. The training sessions emphasized practical strategies for combating violence against women, equipping attendees with tools to enhance their advocacy efforts in their respective communities.

Caren's participation in this workshop is particularly significant given her background in leading initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable populations in Kenya. Her previous work has included advocating for gender-based violence safe houses and comprehensive healthcare support for marginalized groups. This experience enriched the discussions at the workshop, allowing participants to learn from real-world applications of human rights advocacy.

Marking 16 Days of Activism

The timing of the workshop coincided with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, an annual campaign that runs from November 25 to December 10. This global initiative aims to raise awareness about gender-based violence and mobilize action to end it. By participating in this training during this critical period, Caren and her fellow defenders highlighted the importance of sustained activism and solidarity among women across Africa.

The workshop not only served as a platform for learning and sharing experiences but also reinforced the commitment of these defenders to combat violence against women. The collective efforts showcased during this event are vital in fostering a united front against gender-based violence throughout the continent.

Caren Kiarie's involvement in the AIIL training workshop underscores her dedication to advancing human rights and empowering women across Africa. By collaborating with other defenders and sharing her knowledge, she contributes significantly to building resilience among WHRDs facing numerous challenges in their work.
