From February 5th to 8th, 2025, a transformative initiative took shape in Kisumu County, bringing hope and opportunity to the Deaf community and other persons with disabilities (PWDs).
The Nyando Social Justice Center, in collaboration with the Nyanza Presbyterian Community-Based Organization (CBO), successfully convened a pivotal discussion with a prospective Korean partner. This engagement marks a significant step toward securing funding for an ambitious mega project aimed at improving the lives of PWDs in the region.
A Vision for Inclusion
At the heart of these discussions was the creation of a state-of-the-art, multi-functional facility tailored to the unique needs of the Deaf community and other PWDs. This project is built on the principles of inclusion and empowerment, ensuring that marginalized groups gain access to essential services, vocational training, and opportunities for self-reliance.
Groundbreaking Ceremony in Ahero
The culmination of these efforts was celebrated with a groundbreaking ceremony in Ahero, Nyando, where the project will take root. This milestone event not only signified progress but also reinforced the collective commitment to fostering an inclusive society. The facility will serve as a hub for education, skill development, and community engagement, empowering individuals with disabilities to lead independent and fulfilling lives.
Collaborative Efforts
The active participation of the Deaf community in the project’s planning and development underscores the importance of inclusive decision-making. By ensuring that those directly affected are involved in shaping their future, the initiative remains aligned with their real needs and aspirations.
Looking Ahead
As this visionary project unfolds, the Nyando Social Justice Center remains steadfast in its mission to champion the rights and inclusion of PWDs. Every step forward reaffirms the belief that an inclusive society is not just an ideal but an achievable reality—one where every individual, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive.
We invite government agencies, NGOs, private sector partners, and community members to support this groundbreaking initiative. By working together, we can build a future where individuals with disabilities in Kisumu County—and beyond—are empowered to reach their full potential. Join us in making inclusion a lasting legacy.
